WBII Networking event October: Something out of Nothing: The story of building a Flourishing Network

Date: Thursday, 31st October
Location: Carlton Ambassador Hotel
19:00: Doors open for networking
19:30: Meeting, speaker, questions, followed by networking (till 22:00)

When Sara realized that her community needed a space where young professionals could come together and collaborate in an innovative and ambitious atmosphere she faced a dilemma – how do you build something out of nothing? Without members, financial resources or a space to begin with she dived in head-first on a journey of building network with a team of ambitious professionals. Resourcefulness, effective networking and creative tactics where required for its establishment. Now, a year later, the network has acquired nearly 100 members, organized 24 successful  events and has built strong strategic partnerships with several local organizations and businesses.

On October 31st, the founder of Women in Innovation and Leadership (WIL), Sara Kemppainen, will share her story on how she and her team managed to build a flourishing network from scratch. Her story will hone in on two aspects that became critical in founding and leading an enterprise, ‘Resourcing the enterprise’ and Effective Networking’. Join her at the WBII event at 7:30pm and hear how Sara negotiated a free office space for the network, and how her systematic follow back strategies saved her from missing a once in a lifetime opportunity in Japan.

Sara Kemppainen is an active and outspoken social entrepreneur and bachelor student committed to effecting social change. At 16 she was selected to represent Finland at United World College in Italy, in a two-year high school program for future change makers and leaders. Since then, she has initiated numerous community projects and founded her own non-profit, ‘Women in Innovation and Leadership,’ that facilitates collaboration between young women and promotes gender equality in leadership positions.

Currently, Sara is finishing her bachelor in Governance, Economics and Development at the International Honours College of Leiden University, concentrating on policy analysis and international development. With a passion for humanitarian tech, she plans to pursue a UNDP career focused on making humanitarian crises prevention, preparedness and recovery, more responsive.

A new feature to the WBII is a “10-minute highlight” of a member at every networking meeting where one member gets to talk about themselves, their work, and upcoming projects in more detail.
